Before EXTENSION, practices were tasked with reminding patients of an appointment via postcard, email, or phone call, which was time-intensive for operational staff. With EXTENSION, practices now send out appointment reminder notifications instantly via SMS text, automated email, or Text-to-Speech (TTS) phone call based upon the preferences of the patient as indicated in the practice’s EHR.
A pilot at Kaiser Permanente recorded the impact of patient reminders via SMS text message and estimated their practice would save $275,000 per year with full implementation.
