What’s In A Name

The name “EXTENSION” evolved from the notion that our communication and workflow middleware is simply an “EXTENSION” of a healthcare organization’s existing clinical and telephony systems. EXTENSION does not replace any healthcare IT systems but rather acts as the “go between”, pulling and pushing data from various systems to healthcare staff’s communication devices allowing the organization to use their existing systems in a more meaningful manner.

The EXTENSION Engine is a highly-configurable rules-based communication and workflow tool. Healthcare systems using EXTENSION can easily create hundreds or thousands of workflow scenarios that are customized to their particular staff or patient needs. The Engine appliance is painted the color red which further separates EXTENSION from alternative middleware solutions. The name of our website – OpenTheRedBox.com – signifies that healthcare organizations can ‘open the red box of possibilities’ (Ie. create an infinite number of unique rules and workflows) to enhance processes and improve the care continuum.
