The Company
EXTENSION, INC. – a fast-growing healthcare IT company headquartered in Fort Wayne, IN – is the developer of the EXTENSION Solution Suite (ESS) including a sophisticated communication and workflow middleware platform. Development on the ESS began in 2006. Today our solutions are deployed throughout the US in many types of healthcare systems including some of the nation’s largest IDN’s. Our intelligent and user-friendly communication solutions are designed for inpatient and outpatient systems who are laser focused on improving care coordination and cross-departmental connectivity while reducing operational costs. Through our advanced software applications and device-inclusive platform, healthcare systems of any size can leverage their existing clinical systems and VoIP/Wi-Fi infrastructure and adopt mobile phones/tablets for a true hybrid communication environment. The result is improved staff-to-staff and patient-to-staff communication across the enterprise.
EXTENSION’s communication and workflow software is deployed at many private and public sector healthcare facilities including those operated by the United States Department of Veterans Affairs. Our dedicated public sector representatives have extensive experience working with VAMC’s and fully understand their unique clinical systems, buying cycles, caregiver and patient needs, and implementation and security requirements.
Our staff, largely comprised of seasoned healthcare IT professionals, includes clinically-trained IT experts who help interlock patient, caregiver, and IT needs to improve patient safety and enhance clinical workflows while creating a smooth deployment process. Together with our resellers, we use consultative sales and implementation methodologies to ensure our solutions compliment the organization’s existing processes. The result is optimal patient care and greater patient and staff satisfaction.

The Product
EXTENSION’s communication and workflow middleware – similar to an Enterprise Services Bus (ESB) middleware – is the glue that unifies disconnected clinical, telephony systems, and people. What’s more is that EXTENSION doesn’t simply broker messages to/from systems and people, our software filters through massive amounts of data, aggregates important information, and sends smart alerts, messages, and notifications to the right persons. EXTENSION utilizes pre-establish rules – or “triggers” to ensure alerts, messages, and notifications reach the intended person or persons and prioritization and escalation rules are implemented when the situation requires. Furthermore, we offer a highly configurable platform for healthcare systems that want to create their own rules and workflows.
The entire suite of EXTENSION software solutions is built on the EXTENSION Engine, a proprietary messaging middleware platform. The Engine conveniently interacts with common industry standard data formats such as HL7, TAP, SMTP, and web services such as SOAP and REST among others. For convenience our highly-scalable solutions can be installed on-premise or virtually depending on the health systems’ preferences. The Engine is developed in-house allowing for faster technological innovation and integration, easy deployment, user training, and maintenance.
